Ontario Disability Support Program

The Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) is a provincial program that provides financial and employment assistance to people with disabilities.

Income Support

A monthly Income payment provides financial assistance to eligible people through a basic needs component and shelter allowance, based on family size, make-up and other factors. If you qualify for income support, you may also qualify for other benefits, such as health benefits and assistive devices.

ODSP income payments are now increased annually to inflation

Qualifying for ODSP

  • Live in Ontario
  • Have a disability, that is expected to last one year or longer and substantially limits your ability to work, look after yourself or carry out daily activities.
  • Must demonstrate financial need and satisfy an income and an asset test:
    • Assets: your liquid assets cannot exceed $40,000 for an individual and $50,000 for a couple
    • Income: An individual is allowed up to $1,000 per month in employment income. Any amount after the first $1,000 is multiplied by 75% and deducted from a person’s ODSP monthly cheque.

Allowable Assets

  • Principal Residence
  • Vehicle
  • Education savings in RESP
  • Disability Savings in RDSP
  • Personal Items

ODSP income does not provide sufficient income for a basic standard of living and, as a result, hundreds of thousands of people who rely on the program live in poverty.

Employment Support

Employment supports are for you if you can work and want to work. They help you prepare for employment, find a job, start a business or may assist with job supports like tools or special clothing.
